hello again!

sale

I know it’s been a LONG time. My Fluesisters and I have been BUSYBUSYBUSY and haven’t been able to make it to a store, let alone try things on and report. In fact, I couldn’t even remember the last time I tried on a pair of Vogs. Also, the Generalissima hasn’t bought a pair in over a year and a half! GAH! Even worse, I completely missed this year’s International Fluevog Day. (tears!)

Since I’m back in the bay area, the Manpanion (now husband, aka Huz) and I finally made it to visit our friends at Haight Street. Many thanks to Dee (who went up and down those stairs countless times), Rachel and Anka for all their help. They totally held down the fort while FlueDaddy Denny was enjoying a day off.

Since we’re currently in the midst of a sale, here’s the sale stuff I tried on:

image

Colour | Joanne Size 9.5 in black & yellow

I am going to pretend that Mr. Fluevog named these after me. Sadly, I had nothing to do with the design of these Vogs because they fit horribly on my feet. When I first saw them on the site, I knew it wouldn’t be a match made in heaven. Sadly, I was correct. I had to size up 1/2 a size and was a bit too high for my liking and there’s a lot of pressure on the balls of my feet. Plus, the toe box is too narrow, making it pinchy on my wide feet. While the heel is more comfy than I thought, this Joanne was not going home with moi. (sad face) As always, great shoe, just not for my feet.

image

Cosmos | Opposition size 9.5 in black

These Vogs are PERFECTION! Like many, I totally freaked out when the FlueGods announced that the Minis would be officially retired. NO MINIS?! What kind of cruel joke is this? Without the Minis, I’d simply lose my will to live! Luckily, the Cosmos are here and I consider them a newborn cousin of the Minis. The Cosmos have a cute scallop detail that is so adorable. They are super comfy with a slight bouncy feeling. I really love these and I can’t wait to see what else the FlueGods have in store for the future of Cosmos. The Opposition is definitely on my wish list.

Commune | San Jose size 9

Confession: I’m not typically a clog fan. Years ago, I owned the 40th anniversary re-issued clog and unfortunately, we didn’t get along as well as I would have liked. I have since found a wonderful owner for them (I hope). Then there was the arc which I couldn’t even stand in. Therefore, I didn’t have high hopes for San Jose. Boy was I wrong. These felt really good and stable. That I didn’t fall was a huge plus:) I tried on the size 9 and they were tight and a little short. If I were to get these, I’d likely size up to a 10 (no half sizes on these).

image

Look Out | Allure size 9.5 in teal

As Dee pointed out when I tried these on: they’re either perfect for your feet or they’re not. Sadly, these were a no-go for me. The toes were pinchy and the shoe itself was tight (you can see my feet fat sticking out because of this). Perhaps I should have tried on the size 10. Hmph. If they fit you, you better get them! I have a “now vintage” pair of Viardots, and Allure is very similar, but with heart heels!

image

Look Out | Mesmerize size 9.5 in orange.

I really loved these! Again, the heart heel is gorgeous. They also feel a lot better than the previous generations of heart heels. These are a lot more stable. Also, the orange is stunning and I’m in the market for orange (and/or yellow). I have two complaints about these though. First off, there’s puckering. It’s common for me because I have such flat feet. My other complaint is the ribbon.  I need something a little longer. I’m definitely going to look out for the Look Out family.

As you can see, the current sale has some AMAZING things. Do visit your local store or call your favorite Fluevog pusher to place orders!

For the Love of Vogs,

j-ro

Note: In Fluevogs, I’m a women’s size 9. Depending on the fit and family, I size up or down from there. For example, in most Minis, I’m a size 8.5. In the Fellowships, I’m typically a size 9.5. However, I do have wide, flat feet and Morton’s Toe, which makes sizing a little strange for me.

hello fall 2015

Remember when I said that it’s never too late?

Well, I wasn’t lying. Fall has been out for a few months now. Here are some things that the Manpanion and I managed to try on. Enjoy!

IMG_0926

Twin Turbines | 837 Granville St. Size 10 in blue. These are the newest addition to the Manpanion’s collection. Please note that this pic does not do these Vogs justice at all. These are absolutely gorgeous. They’re sleek and according to him, very comfy. These days, our buying habits have slimmed down because we’re planning/paying for our nuptials. However, these are not a pair that you want to wait to go on sale for. In fact, I highly doubt this will make it to sale time. This color combo is such a head turner. This family seems to suit the Manpaion well, as he has another pair from here. These are definitely his pick of the season!

IMG_0921

Choice | Margie. Size 10.5 in black. These were pretty much gone, so I had to try on the only size that could possibly fit me. Apologies, as I do not have any sizing info for you. I have an old pair of Margie in red. I’m so happy to see these return, but in better style. First off, this color combo is beautiful. They’re wide in the toe, which my wide feet love. The straps on these are thicker and sturdier than the original Margie. As flats, they’re an all-day shoe. Finally (though I didn’t take a pic of it), I heart the heart heels!

IMG_0924Mini | Bunny. Size 9. Be still my beating heart. I have mentioned many times my “no doubles” rule. I already have these in blue/yellow (I affectionately call them my Berkeley Ph.D. shoes because the Manpanion gifted them to me when I filed.). If I were to break the “no doubles” rule (again), I’d totally snag these. It’s a great color combo and you can’t go wrong with the Minis.
IMG_0919Sopranos | Robyn. Size 9 in orange. Many moons ago when I met the famous Stacey K. (whose fabulousness has been immortalized in a namesake Fluevog), she let me try on a pair of Vogs from the Soprano family. I think of the original Sopranos as a higher heeled, less comfortable cousin of the Operetta family. Well, Mr. Fluevog must have heard my complaiants because the new iteration of the Soprano family is AMAZING. They’re true to size, have a higher heel than the Operettas, but are equally comfy and stable. I wasn’t expecting to fall in love, but these babies in ORANGE are my personal pick of the season. The lacing on these make Robyn totally stand out. While I would normally opt for the black in a Vog like this, ORANGE is the one you want!

IMG_0922

Hopefuls | Holly. Size 10 in blue. Again, these were pretty much out. Denny brought me the size 10 because they were all that was left. These in 10 were way too big. However, I loved how easy it was to wear. The profile is low and easy to slip on and off. Also, who doesn’t love that blue?!

IMG_0925

Mini | Gorgeous. Size 9.5 in teal/purple. I loved these too! I’m a Mini fan and again, I’m so happy to see the return of a classic (but in a totally sassy color). I went up 1/2 size in these. Yes, I’m sure the die-hards alreay have these on their lists (if not already on their feet).

Again, MANY THANKS for your patience. I’d like to give special kudos to our friends at Haight Street, You’re wonderful and I miss you when I’m in Arizona.

For the love of Vogs,

j-ro

it’s never too late

Sigh. Hello everyone! I know it seems like we have fallen off the face of the earth. I’m SOOOOOOO sorry for that! Like you, the ladies of FTLOV have been extremely busy with work, life, family, and all sorts of life transitions. Please don’t worry. We all have been handling life in fabulous Fluevog stride.

I have a few posts waiting in the wings, and this is the first of the bunch. I recently visited our awesome dealers on Haight Street. (Oh my, it’s been ages since the Manpanion and I have seen Denny!) For this first post, I wanted to show some things that have been released for some time now, and are still currently on clearance. Here you go!

IMG_0930

Truths | Jessica. Size 10 in black. For those of you who follow this blog, you know that I’m not into pointy shoes. I have super wide, flat feet and pointy shoes just make my feet look gargantuan. However, I had a change of heart when I met Bekkie. As of late,Bekkie has been my go-to Vog. Therefore, I just HAD to try on her sister Jessica. I gotta say that she rocks it just as hard! Because I’m wide, I did have to go up a full size to a 10 (from my normal 9). Yes, these babies are on SALE and available in two colors: black (as shown) and brown.

IMG_0928

Power | Wind. Size 9.5 in blue. Confession: I’ve been MIA because the Manpanion and I are getting married soon. We’ve been saving up and trying to figure out the logistics of celebrating the nuptials. With that, I’ve been on the market for a great flat to get my dance floor groove on. While Wind didn’t work for me (it’s too narrow and going up a size is just too long for my foot), I can see why one would go ga-ga over these. The color is perfect for a wedding (yay something blue + something new… or old). For the right foot, these are super comfy. Plus, you can wear them with or without the band.

IMG_0927

Power | Water. Size 9.5 in blue. This was another wedding dance possibility. With these, I was concerned about the width (my toes were a little pinchy). Again, a great casual shoe, but I was on a mission!

IMG_0923

Modvog | Anna Maria. Size 9.5 in blue. I LOVED these! I wish I bought them at that other site when they were a really good price. However, I hesitated when I saw the look on the Manpanion’s face. He wasn’t as big a fan as I was. Yes, I agree that these aren’t as formal as one would like a wedding dance shoe to be. So the search continues….

IMG_0920

Twin Turbines | 1265 Wisconsin Ave. Size 10 in navy/white. I had no idea that the Manpanion had been eyeing these for a while. Luckily, they were available in his preferred size and color. I must say, they look spiffy! He has also been mindful of what Fluevog needs he has for our upcoming nuptials. The Manpanion opted for this pair for our engagement photos (which we just took this past weekend).

By the way, if you’re looking for an AMAZING photographer, we HIGHLY RECOMMEND you check out Nerinna Valera. She’s INCREDIBLE! Our pictures will be ready in the next few weeks. The Manpanion and I can’t wait to show you some of the awesome Fluevog shots she took. For now, you’ll have to settle for our iphone sneak peek:

IMG_7502

Again, apologies for the lag in posting. Like I said, I have a few waiting in the wings, including some from the current fall collection. Of course, we’ll share some scenes from our engagement pictures! Until then….

For the love of Vogs,

j-ro

FlueReview: Spring 2015

Joanne and I, along with friends Cheryl and Mae, visited the Melrose store during Joanne’s brief visit to Los Angeles about a week ago to try on the new styles, and we were not disappointed. This Spring, the shoes range from cute and quirky to sleek, from romantic and flirty to downright sexy.

This is a continuation of our review of the latest Spring styles — see Joanne’s lovin’ lala land for the first part. In this post will be the shoes that Cheryl and I tried on. Cheryl’s up first, so here are her sizing notes:

Cheryl is a US 7.5 street size with a medium arch, medium wide feet, and a longer second toe. She seems to run on the lower end of 7.5 (perhaps 7.25), so she stays true to size when others have to go up half a size.

AngelinaSoprano | Angelina in black. Size 7.5. Cheryl found these true to size. All of our jaws dropped when she tried these on. Let’s just say these wouldn’t go amiss in a bondage-friendly film. Very sexy and va-va-voom. Joanne calls them over-the-shoulder shoes.

CallasMezzo | Callas in blue. Size 7.5. These were also true to size for Cheryl. I think these are in the romantic and flirty category, and they look adorable on both Cheryl and Mae. The soft laces and this colorway in particular — the dusky blue with the turquoise soles — evoke spring very strongly for me (they’re not as green as they appear in the photo).

CareySoprano | Carey in black. Size 7.5. Another true-to-size Soprano for Cheryl. She found these very comfortable even though she was worried at first about the height of the heel. She was looking for shoes to wear in the courtroom, and these certainly look like they mean business.

ElifMini | Elif in black/ivory. Size 7.5. Cheryl found these true to size (others usually go down 1/2 size compared to other Minis). She ended up taking these home. Between the Carey and the Elif, this style had both the business factor she was looking for and the wow factor that Fluevog is known for.

SamBlueKKBB | Sam in blue/navy. Size 7.5. Cheryl found these just a smidgen large; if they’d had a 7.25 they would have been perfect. The Sam is one of the more delightful additions this Spring. Joanne thinks that this style will definitely come back in future seasons in other colorways. Given the reception they’ve already received, I’m with her on this.

***

Here are the styles I tried, including the Sam in the other colorway. My sizing notes:

I am a true size US 5.5. I have relatively-flat arches, wide toes, and narrowish ankles. I regularly wear 5 in the Operetta, Mini, Attention, and Baroque families; 5 or 5.5 in the Bellevue and Fellowship families; and 6 in the Radio family. I gained a bit of weight in the last year, though, so I think my feet are a little wider now, which makes me want to go up in size more often when I try shoes.

SamRedKKBB | Sam in cherry/blue/white. Size 6. I tried on my usual size in the Liz style of this family but found that the Sam fits slightly bigger. It’s possible that I could comfortably wear a 5.5, but since the Melrose store didn’t carry anything smaller than the 6, I can’t be sure about that. I wanted to show you this angle because of the straps. With my flat arches, I had to use the tighter of two snap buttons, which meant that the straps kind of winged out to the sides. I personally don’t mind this, but I can imagine that some people might not like this particular silhouette for themselves.

BudapestEarth Angel* (not on the website) | Budapest in turquoise. Size 6. Half size to full size small. We’re not sure if this is the correct family because the shoe isn’t on the website yet. I have three pairs from the Earth Angel family, which I thought was retired a few years ago, and the fit on the soles feels very similar if not the same. This particular style isn’t as immediately comfortable as my older pairs, but if I went up a full size to 6.5 and wore them with cozy socks, I can see them becoming a go-to ankle boot. The leather is very soft and velvety and would break in easily. This colorway is fabulous.

GardinerBrownRules Low | Gardiner in brown. Size 5.5. This is the same family as the Joni and the fit is the same for me, true to size — although my toes look incredibly close to the edge there. These were comfortable upon first trying on, and I really like this darker brown.

GardinerFloralRules Low | Gardiner in floral. Size 5.5. True to size. Joanne asked me to try on the floral. I think they’re prettier than the brown, but I find that they’re too close to “nude” for my skin color and basically get washed out. Still a very comfortable sandal, though. The heel on this family is great because it’s fairly low and stable but has an interesting shape.

GladiceBWPetit Talon* (not on the website) | Gladice in white/black. Size 6. Runs a quarter to half a size small. I was really excited to try these on because, hello, they’re kind of my namesake (Gladice is the French spelling of my name). PLUS I love kitten heels and the soles of these are adorable (Petit Talon is also French for kitten heel, although I’m not positive that this is the family name because it’s not on the website yet). I totally forgot to take a pic of the sole — next time! — but it says something like big surprises come in small packages “Small Things Can Bring Big Pleasures.” Love! And seriously, look at this colorway. It’s very striking. I’m not a white-shoe person at all, but I think I’ll have to make an exception for these. When I asked how I could style them, Mae immediately suggested treating them like a neutral.

GladiceBlackPetit Talon* | Gladice in black. Size 6. The white/black colorway wowed us, but the black one not so much. It’s because the interesting detail of the patent-leather toes gets muted. It’s still a great shape, however, and I think this would look wonderful with the right ankle-length trousers or skinny jeans.

TacoSwordfish Women’s | Rococo Taco in black. Size 6. Maybe a quarter size small (I felt like I had a bit of room in the 6, but these don’t come in smaller sizes). I saved this one for last because it’s the one that was furthest from my style preferences but ended up surprising me. I think it looks both tough and sexy, what with the tongueless peekaboo going on there with the detailed straps. The surprise came with the comfort factor — it didn’t feel like a 3.5″ heel at all, and the pointy toes were also comfortable for me. They were also fairly easy to put on because of the inside zipper. I was very impressed. I have nothing like this in my collection, yet I can see myself creating outfits around them, from casual to clubbing to the opera. Hmm, we’ll see.

AntonLiving | Anton in grey. These were worn (and bought) by a lovely lady we met during our visit, Trish, a longtime Vogger who lives in the area. We enjoyed talking to her so much that we asked to take a photo of her wearing these shoes. These are supposed to be grey but they’re really more beige (the lighting makes them look even darker than they are).

FlowerWheelHere’s the requisite flower wheel from the end of our visit. Thanks once again to Fluevogologists Ali and Jonny for taking care of us and working so hard to help us try on so many pairs. I found out that Ali and I are basically size twins, so I hope that the Melrose store will carry the smaller sizes in the future! *crossing fingers* 🙂 Jonny, who is very tall, took this photo because he could get all of us in the shot. He’s at the 6 o’clock position (forgot to ask what shoe he’s wearing), and going clockwise from there is Ali in the Liz, Cheryl in her new Elif, Mae in the Woop Woop, me in the Sandra, and Joanne in her vintage Rayelle.

Let us know in the comments which pairs you’re lusting after!

xo,
Gladys

lovin’ lala land

Hello Fellow Flueddicts!

This past weekend, I was lucky enough to be in Los Angeles for research. It’s been a while since I have spent any substantive time in the area. Naturally, I carved out some much-needed gal pal time. On Friday night, I met with Miss Gladys and my college besties Mae and Cheryl. We headed out to Melrose with two objectives: 1) find me a wedding dress and 2) visit the LA Fluevog store!

We reached the store at around 7ish and basically closed out the place (they’re open ’til 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays). I want to give an extra special thanks to Ali and Jonny for all their hard work. They brought out dozens of boxes for us and patiently let us try on numerous Vogs just so we could provide these FlueReviews for you. If you’re ever in the LA area, please do not hesitate to visit the Melrose store. Tell them that the MotleyFlue sent you!

To make the posts manageable, Gladys and I divided the pics. She will be sharing what she and Cheryl tried on. I will go over what Mae and I tried on. I know you all have been anxiously waiting to see the spring collection. Here it goes!

IMG_0579Mezzo| Callas. Size 6.5. Mae went down 1/2 a size in this one. She says it was a little tight on the right toe (and admits it’s a personal thing). For me, I’m not big on laces, but I do think these are so cute! The color is amazing and the pop of turquoise on the soles make it extra special!

IMG_0568

Kitschy Kitschy Boom Boom | Sam. Size 7.5. For Mae, these needed to come in quarter sizes because size 7.25 would have been perfect! She described them as comfy-ish (likely because of sizing). I think we can all agree that these are soooo cute! They remind me of something that came from the Hopes family years ago. Like many things in the KKBB line, I think Sam is here to stay, and that she’s coming in other colors (don’t get me started on the Raspberry Heels colorway; it’s to die for!). Dear John Fluevog: I’d like to see this in a burgundy/grey or purple/grey combo. I also hope you you bring the Raspberry Heels colorway to your stores.

IMG_0571

Tasty Vogs | Dorothy. Size 7.5. Mae went up 1/2 size and says they are really comfortable. In fact, she kept these on her feet for quite a while. My spider senses tell me that these could potentially be on Mae’s want list. I really like these. They remind me of my mother, and I’m sure lots of Filipina moms would be proud to see their daughters sport this:) They have that nostalgic feel and I wouldn’t be surprised if my mom owned a pair like these! The MotleyFlue would like to think that these babies were named after our very own Dorothy, the Artful Voger. (Yes, it’s been ages since you’ve heard from Miss Dorothy. She’s been super busy.)IMG_0576Bellevues | Mollie Johnson. Size 7. These are from Mae’s favorite family. They fit true-to-size and the color combination is fantastic! The patent leather navy blue with magenta/pink really make these stand out. (They also match Mae’s socks perfectly!)

IMG_0573

Family TBA | Budapest. Size 8. These are so new that they’re not on the site and we don’t even know the family name yet. (I think they’re from the Earth Angels family, but I could be wrong.) In truth, I was surprised that the gals tried these on because they’re not exactly the cutest things in the store. (That’s about as nice as I’m going to get with these.) Mae had to go up a full size. She confesses that they’re really comfortable and will grow on you – even though they look like aqua socks.

IMG_0574Sopranos | Angelina. Size 7.5. Online, these don’t look like much. However, the story is day-and-night different when you see these in person. Mae went up 1/2 size and did not want to take them off. In fact, she loved them so much that she tried them on in BOTH colors! My spider senses tell me that these will also make it to her coveted list of acquired Fluevogs. These reminded me of a very conservative version of the famous Grand Nationals. It’s the tongue-less boot that makes me feel this way.

*****

Below are the Fluevogs I tried on. As you will notice, I only tried on three pairs. It was a long day for me (up at 2am to pack and arrive in LA by 9am; headed to the museum and spent the day there; checked in to the hotel; met the gals…) and since the other gals were doing some serious searching, I opted to lay low with respect to trying things on. Also, we had just come from the Tatyana Boutique, where I managed to find my wedding dress (yay!). Since I kinda hogged everyone’s attention with my wedding needs, I wanted to let everyone else get their fair share of shopping love. Finally, because I was so tired and dehydrated, my left leg started to cramp really badly! It made the latter part of our visit miserable for me. Again, I want to thank Ali for helping me out by making sure I was properly hydrated. It really helped alleviate a miserable situation.

IMG_0572

Truths | Bekkie. Size 10. I have been wanting to add something from the Truths family to my collection for a long time now. I’m still kicking myself for not investing in the Pilgrims. Oh. My. God. Bekkie – look at these shoes! I like these Vogs and I cannot lie… (okay, I’ll stop). The low heels makes these super comfy. I love the look of the open spaces and I really need a pointed toe in my collection. Even though I went up a full size, there was still slight pinching on the sides of my feet. If I were to get these, I’d need to stretch them. Yes. These are FABULOUS! If you love printed socks and tights, these are an amazing compliment!

IMG_0578

Kitschy Kitschy Boom Boom: Liz. Size 10. I typically have to go up a full size in these. This color was no exception. Much to everyone’s surprise, I do not have this Vog in my collection. Though this is a nice color combo, it’s just not me. I’m still waiting for the perfect colors before I commit to Liz.

IMG_0565

Prepares | Guide. Size 9.5. Truth be told, I broke my no doubles policy when I put these on layaway in San Francisco. They are gorgeous! I have been wanting something with this print, but nothing quite suited me. I’m so glad that these are available and I’m sure they have been selling well. I went up 1/2 size on these. The top part seemed a little snug, so it will need some stretching before taking these home. I couldn’t go up to a 10 because the footbed would be too long. Sigh. I love these!

I hope you enjoyed checking out the spring collection as much as we loved trying them on for you. In comments, please let us know what you have your eyes on. Also, what color combos are you looking for?!

Mae typically wears size 7. The Bellevues are her favorite family.

stuff i should have posted ages ago

When I came home for Thanksgiving, I naturally went to the Fluevog store. Thank heaven the Manpanion understands my need to go to the store. It’s home to me. Le Dealers at Haight Street are wonderful. My love for the shoes also has something to do with the people who work there. Le Dealers are so patient and kind – especially when it comes to this blog. It takes a lot for them to run up and down those stairs bringing box after box for the Manpanion and I to try on. Seriously. On most days, I’m sure it’s not fun. This is why I always give Le Dealers my everlasting kudos. You folks are awesome!

Before I continue, I want to again, apologize for lagging on these posts. Last semester was a big one for me. I was teaching five course (with four new preps), while launching a sixth one for my program. In addition, I had to travel for two conferences and one talk. Needless to say, I was wiped! While I’m not trying to make excuses, I will say that these posts are always better late than never. Here we go!

IMG_0487

Mini | Elif. Size 9 in LE Raspberry. These are a Haight Street Limited Edition Vog. I’m almost positive that by now, they’re sold out. However, I suggest you contact them to verify. As I have said before, I have a strict no doubles policy. Therefore as much as I loved these, I knew they wouldn’t come home with me because I already have them in black and ivory. I will say that these fit a little more narrow than usual. I typically take size 8.5 in these. However, I tried on the 9 and while the length was fine, the width felt a little snug. I’ve seen folks on Fluevog Fridays wear these and they’re adorable!

IMG_0490

IMG_0491

Global Freedoms | Privacy. Black & Metallic. These are now on sale. The Manpanion loved these. If they came in his size, he would have taken these home by now. These would have been the perfect wedding Vogs! FlueDaddy Denny explained that something must have been off with production because these came in HUGE sizes. The Manpanion is typically a size 9ish in Fluevogs. Therefore, the smallest size (10) was a bit big. We affectionately called these the Robocop shoes because they had that futuristic feel. C’mon, they even had charging station dots!

IMG_0489

Idols | Freddie. Burgundy. These are also currently on sale. My dear friend Monica purchased these when we were in Toronto. I wanted the Manpanion to check them out. He has a similar boot, but I wanted to see what he thought about the zipper details. These are AMAZING! I love the Cuban heel and the shape is great. Though it’s a men’s shoe, women with larger feet who love the masculine details will want to add this to their collection.

We didn’t try on that much because we were there during Black Friday. While we did manage to meet some awesome folks from Fluevog Fridays, we had to cut our visit short because I was heading back to Phoenix in the next few days. Sadly, my trips back to San Francisco often feel short. Therefore, the Manpanion and I try our best to spend as much time together as possible.

Of course, we took a quintessential Fluevog shot. Here it is!

IMG_0477

Last fall, I was also doing a lot of traveling. Though I did not purchase any new Vogs to add to my arsenal (Confession: I’m a Haight Street loyalist), the lovely Dealers in Toronto (both Queen Street and The Distillery) and Chicago did treat me well during my visit(s). That post is coming up sometime soon, I swear! For now, here are some things I tried on.

IMG_0392

Passage | Preet. Size 10 in silver. I tried these on at Queen Street, Toronto. For me, these were a bit narrow, so I went up to a size 10. I really loved these. There’s a small heel, but still super comfy. The copper zipper and rub-off texture really give these babies life. They’re currently on sale, which makes getting them super tempting. However, I’m going to have to be a good girl. (But if any of you wanted to be my Flue-fairy godparent, I’d love you forever!) I know these are going to be that pair that got away. However, there are just too many on my “want” list. Sigh.

IMG_0391

Hopscotch | Double Dutch. Size 10 in grey. I tried these on at Queen Street, Toronto  because someone on Fluevog Fridays asked me to. Otherwise, I would not have given these any consideration. However, these are a definite surprise for me. For those of you who love the Summertime family, you’ll like these because they’re high, but REALLY stable. The grippy bottoms really make a difference. (However, I’d like to note that these are not all-day Vogs. Where the Summertimes are a 6ish hour shoe, I’d say the Hopsctoch family is a 5-6ish hour shoe.) I recommend you check these out because they have some amazing details:

The grippy heels totally add to the stability of this Vog.

I think that’s it for now. Again, thank you for your patience. It’ll be a while before I make it back to San Francisco to try on the spring collection. I must say… there are some GORGEOUS Vogs this season! Though I’m not a spring gal, the paisley Guides, Sam (I’m hoping these stay because I’d be all over this in a purple/grey combo), and Callas have already captured my heart.

Please post to comments: What are your spring picks?!

Desert FlueReview: Fall 2014 Sale

Lo Fs Stella

I brought home the navy and orange Lo Fs | Stella on my last visit. Ready for rain now!

Apologies for not posting these many months now. I promise I have been trying on and buying Vogs the last year, but given various obligations (including finishing my doctorate!) I just wasn’t able to find the time to process photos and write them up. Plus my computer and phone have both started slowing down quite a bit, making the photos even more time-consuming to process.

In any case, I finally have another omnibus review for you of the current shoes on sale, even as the new Spring 2015 shoes trickle into the store. I’ve seen the sneak previews, and no doubt that this new season is incredibly fun! However, I wanted to highlight some of the current shoes (most are ON SALE!!) that deserve at least another look. Joanne has shared some beautiful photos and reviews of some of these already. Here’s how they look on different sets of feet.

The pics here are from two different visits, the more recent of which was in the company of lovely Mae, who is the one wearing the gray herringbone socks in the photos. Her feet were made for heels, it seems. Lucky lady! (I’m the one wearing the footies and the gray socks with stars.)

Here are our shoe size details:

I am a true size US 5.5. I have relatively-flat arches, wide toes, and narrowish ankles. I regularly wear 5 in the Operetta, Mini, Attention, and Baroque families; 5 or 5.5 in the Bellevue and Fellowship families; and 6 in the Radio family. I gained a bit of weight in the last year, though, so I think my feet are a little wider now, which makes me want to go up in size more often when I try shoes.

Mae is a 7 with average arches and medium/wide width. Like me, she ranges in size over different types of Vogs, depending on width, toe box shape, and height of the heel. Different Vog families differ quite a lot in sizing. Moreover, the sizing of certain styles within the same family can differ, and even the same style can differ in sizing from season to season. For these reasons, it’s important to try on the shoes if possible, or at least to consult via phone or email with a Fluevog specialist at one of the stores.

Queen of the Skies NeptuneQueen of the Skies | Neptune in green. Size 6. Definitely specialty shoes, and not for the faint of heart! These are sky high, as the family name suggests. They’re very striking, and if you can handle the height and need a pair that will stand out, these are the shoes for you!

Modvog Mariella BlackModvog | Mariella in black. Not sure what size these are as my friend Melanie tried these on, but I do believe they are between true to size (TTS) and a half size small.

Modvog Mariella GoldModvog | Mariella in gold. Size 6. I found these between TTS and half size small as the 6 was quite comfortable. The oxford style keeps my feet in quite well. There’s enough room to wear socks.

Fellowship ErikaFellowship | Erika in purple and navy. Size 5.5. I love Erikas and the Fellowship family in general. This was true to size for me. The colorway is even better looking in person, but I would have preferred that the colors were switched (see Sandra below).

Fellowship SandraFellowship | Sandra in navy and purple. Size 5.5. True to size. This photo shows off the blue even better. The lighter blue of the piping and stitching is really wonderful.

Down to Earth ValentinaDown to Earth | Valentina in gold. Beautiful Kate let me take this photo of her wearing her Valentinas as a neutral color. She’s in the highest range of women’s sizes (the other end of the spectrum from me). She says she loves these, and they look amazing.

Elegant Conversations GailElegant Conversations | Gail in purple. I like the purple so much more than in the stock photos on the Fluevog website. I’m sorry I can’t remember what size these are — size 5.5 or 6…they might run half a size small, actually. Do call a Fluevogologist at your favorite store. Very elegant looking, but a little high.

Elegant Conversations KendraElegant Conversations | Kendra in black and beige. Same issue as the Gail with the sizing — I dropped the ball and didn’t take notes on this particular visit. Sorry about that. I want to say 6 because the Melrose store doesn’t always carry the smaller sizes, but I could be wrong. I think these are very striking shoes and would look great in the office.

Mezzo CeciliaMezzo | Cecilia in burgundy. Size 6. These run a half size large, I believe. The 6 were really big on my feet. I like the spats on the side and these were easy to put on. Great ankle boots.

Bellevue Rose DunnBellevue | Rose Dunn in black with patent. Size 7. True to size. This is Mae wearing these. She said they fit like her other Bellevues. I love that you can see her herringbone socks through the laces. It’s a very sexy corset look.

Enneagram Grace BlackEnneagram | Grace in black. Size 6.5. I had to go up a full size in these for comfort, but comfortable they were. This is one of the more subtle Fluevog styles, but this was the one pair that I didn’t really want to take off. I love the teal stitching and teal elastic (which you can’t see unless you actually stretch the opening).

Enneagram Grace BrownEnneagram | Grace in brown. Size 7.5. Mae only had to go up half a size in the Grace. I like the look of these as well, and they’re on a particularly nice sale (nicer than the black).

Unite GhaliUnite | Ghali in burgundy (only black available). Size 7. Mae found these slightly big in her true size. She didn’t think 6.5 would have worked better, though. These are very striking shoes, with that unique U-shaped heel. The buckles are a great detail.

Fortitude LutherFortitude | Luther in brown. Size 8. Mae really liked these and was trying to decide whether or not to take these home (she ultimately didn’t, but she could only take one pair home). She had to go up a full size and they still needed to soften at the arch area. I remember I had to go up 1.5 sizes (to a 7) in the metallic colorway last year just to try them on. These shoes need quite a bit of breaking in, but I hear people love them once they break them in.

Hopscotch Jumprope BlackHopscotch | Jump Rope in black. Size 6.5. This shoe was the surprise for me during the Melrose visit with Mae, and I believe she was impressed with them too. They’re high but comfortable and stable, and they look amazing in profile. The black colorway is more of a very dark gray, as you can see. To me they fit like Miracles, which are narrow with a small-ish toe box. I had to go up one full size in these (as I also do in Miracles). If these and the gray colorway go on sale, I think I will get them. If they don’t, I suppose I can put them on layaway for my birthday in April. 🙂

Hopscotch Jumprope GrayHopscotch | Jump Rope in gray. Size 6.5. Very important note: the leather of this colorway is softer than the black and therefore the 6.5 in these feels a touch bigger than in the black. Mae tried on the gray as well in her true size 7, and while they were a little tight she felt like they would stretch enough to better accommodate her feet. I like this colorway very much as well, with the brown accents.

Hopeful VowHopeful | Vow in brown multi. Size 7. First of all, why is this colorway called brown? LOL. Mae loved these and took them home. They’re true to size for her. The Hopeful family has a great sole and heel, and excellent comfort. I love the look of these, which remind of the Promise oxfords in the Hope family.

Queen of Prussia LudovikaQueen of Prussia | Ludovika in burgundy. Size 6. Quite narrow, especially at the toe box. Going up half a size was fine for the length, but I can tell this is not the family for me. Just not comfy for my wide toes.

Queen of Prussia LouiseQueen of Prussia | Louise in burgundy. Size 7. Mae felt the same about the narrow toe box on this shoe. She really loved the buckle detail, and we both thought the heel and shape were just gorgeous. Sadly, there wasn’t much comfort factor for either of us.

FlowerwheelThis flower wheel includes, from 6 o’clock going clockwise, Mae in paisley Bellevue | De Vere boots, Jonny in black brogues (not sure what these are), Kate in brown laceless Radio | CBC oxfords, and me in purple Radio | PRI boots. Again, I enjoyed myself lots on my Fluevog visits, and I took advantage of the fantastic sale! I took home the navy/orange Stella boots (see first photo above), but I also bought the berry Amies, which had to be ordered from a different store. When I get them I’ll post…in fact, I should do a post on my recent acquisitions — I went a little crazy last fall! Happy New Year and happy Vogging!

{ETA:} I forgot to give proper credit to Vogger friends Emily, Melanie, and Mae for taking the photos of my feet in shoes during these two visits. Ladies, thank you so much for joining me on the fun and taking photos!

xo, Gladys

Fall 2014: the heels

Hello All!

This is my final post, which looks at this season’s offerings. Well, it’s the final one for now. I had the pleasure of visiting our dealers at Haight Street and they were kind enough to let me try on thirteen different pairs of Vogs (plus the  three pairs the Manpanion tried on) within two different visits. Believe me, it’s a total production for them to bring out all the boxes and pack them up and such. I’m very thankful for their patience and their excellent suggestions. Here we go….

Shana

I Believe High | Shana. Size 9. True to size. I’m a HUGE fan of the I Believe family. These are as awesome as my Simons. The toe area is really roomy and you don’t really need a break-in period. I should have tightened those buckles!

Lynx

Wonders | Lynx. Size 9. Need to size up to size 9.5. I’m not a snakeskin person, but man, these were awesome! The heel is low and comfy, and this boot looks amazing with jeans.

Karyn

Hi Living | Karyn. Size 9. True to size. These are cousins to the Malcolm, a Vog I wish were part of my collection. These seem to be a descendant of the I Believe family in terms of comfort. Hence, I’m a Karyn fan. I hope these come in different colors in the future.

Gail

Elegant Conversations | Gail. Size 9. Runs small. I probably need size 10 because my feet are so wide. OMG. My toes were totally in pain when I tried these on. As I’ve said before, pointy toes and I just aren’t good friends. However, these are a GORGEOUS black pump. If I were in the market for a pair, I’d size up. The heel is sturdy and I love the profile. When I get back to the bay area, I’ll have to re-visit Gail in a more appropriate size.

Tinder

Prepare 2.0 | Tinder. Size 9.5. I recommend sizing up 1/2 size. [Cue the music of the angels] Major credit goes to Queen Monika. I thought I was done trying shoes on when she suggested I check these out. When I tried these out, I felt like a goddess. While I’m not in the market for a black boot, I am ALWAYS looking for the Vog that makes me feel invincible. This season, that Vog is the Tinder. Without batting an eyelash, these went straight to layaway. I can’t wait to take them home.

That’s it for the FlueReviews (for now). Hope you’re having a wonderful fall!

For the love of Vogs,

Fall 2014: the flats

Hello All!

Welcome to another edition of FlueReviews. To make the posts manageable, I decided to divide the Vogs I tried on into several posts. This is the second of three posts I have brewing for you all. I hope you enjoyed the last post that included the pairs the Manpanion tried on.

CBC

*Haight Exclusive* Radios | CBC in purple leather. Size 9. When in Haight, one must try on the Haight only CBCs. The CBCs are a stable part of the Fluevog line. Every die-hard possesses at least one pair from the Radio family. (I’d die if they ever got rid of this family!) For those of you familiar with the Nuni in purple, these CBCs use the same leather. As a flat-footed gal, the size 9 was a little pinchy for me. I’d likely go up to size 9.5. In the past, I’ve ordered a men’s size 7 in the Radio family because I like the extra width. There’s not a lot I can say about the CBC except this color is AMAZING. Plus, it’s not suede, like the other purple version that has come in this style.

Lilnda

Tank | Linda. Size 9. In truth, I’m not big on shoes like this because I have really flat, wide feet. I tend to opt to shoes that go a little higher because on me, they pucker (see the Linda and Mariella below). In terms of sizing, if I were to get these, I’d have to go up 1/2 a size to 9.5 because of my wide feet. While they’re not me, I totally see Madam Shirley in these. The color is great and I love the shade of brown.

Mariella
Modvogs | Mariella. Size 9.  Just like the Vogs above, I had a puckering issue with these. I tried on size 9, but if I were to consider getting these, I’d opt for size 9.5. These come in several colors, but the gold is really striking! I’d love to see these in pewter.

Tilda
Tank | Tilda. Size 9. For these, I thought that they ran true.  Granted, they were pinchy, but with some stretching, they’d totally work. I was surprised at how easy it was to put these on because typically, a shoe like this is stiff and need that break-in period to slip your foot in. These were nice and soft. I felt the foot bed was a bit long, which is why I’d opt to stretch before taking them home. My favorite part? I love the pewter detail on the top heel. It’s what makes this Vog stand out.

Valentina
Down to Earth | Valentina. Size 9. These ran true to size for me. They’re flat, super comfy, and again, I’m loving the gold. These remind me of the BBC, but with a different tongue area. These seem to be a favorite of Le Dealers.

That’s it! Hope you enjoyed this edition of fall FlueReviews.

oh haight, how i’ve missed you!

After being away for two months, I’m finally back for fall break. As promised, one of the first things I did was visit le dealers at Haight Street. Ah, it was so great to be home. There’s a ton of fall stuff I haven’t tried, so it was nice to finally see everything in person. Sadly, I didn’t get to see everything I wanted to see. It’s okay. I’ll make another trip ASAP! For now, here’s what the Manpanion and I saw.
Della
Mezzo | Della. Size 9. I was so excited to try these. They’re super comfy and oh-so-cute! Who doesn’t love the red bunching? The size 9 was a bit tight and I could feel my outer toes wanting to pop out. Therefore, for a wide foot like mine, I would likely go up half a size. The downside is that I’d have to sacrifice length. I was having slipping issues with these. Going up a size would make it worse. Granted, a good insole would would fix that easily. Della is a gorgeous stand out. Something tells me this is just the beginning of her beautiful life. I’d LOVE to see her in teal, grey, or petrol blue!
Mezzo Soles
Since this is a new family, I thought you’d like to see the soles.
Cecilia
Mezzo | Cecilia. Size 9.5. Since Della was pinchy, I asked Le Dealer Alan to size up for Cecilia. I’m in love with this boot! Gorgeous and simply unique, this is another head turner of the season. The button details are so cute. Even the Manpanion was drooling! I’m not on the market for this color right now, and to me, a boot like this needs to be in a standout color. Rest assured, when this comes out in other colors, I’m going to seriously consider purchasing them.

Grace

Enneagram | Grace. Size 9. The Grace is a nice, simple boot that has some nice details such as the orange elastic and the heel shape. If you’re in the market for a simple boot like this, then yes, Grace is for you. I tried on size 9, but would need to go up 1/2 a size because these were really tight. Another minor issue I had with these is simply squeezing my fat foot into the shoe. I’m a zip-up boot kind of gal.

Grace.Sole

Here is a shot of Grace’s sole. Love the orange and the heel detail. Of course, love the “Be your true self” message!

TryOn

Since the Manpanion was with me, I coerced him to try on some Vogs too. (Actually, it doesn’t take much to convince him to try on some Vogs. He often stalks checks out the site to see what he could potentially add to his collection.)

Nathan

Guardian Angel | Nathan. Size 9.5. The Manpanion tried these on before, but in brown. When they added the green this season, I nearly cried. I’d actually wear these myself! They’re really comfy, cool-looking, and have an awesome sole. What more could one want from a Vog? These make a great alternative for those of you who want something that isn’t brown or black. The Manpanion loved these so much that he decided these would be the next member of his coveted collection!

Nathan.Soles

Check out the soles. They’re green! I’m declaring that if Yoda ever designed a Vog, these would be it:)

Jose.black

Jose.Brown

Guardian Angel | Jose. Size 9. Every season, there is always that ONE Vog that becomes the ONE to WATCH. Le Dealer Alan brought out the Guardian Angel | Jose because a) these were Alan’s next purchase and b) they have the same name as the Manpanion. I saw these online and just thought, “meh.” However, given the comfort and the look, I’m going to declare that these are the surprise for the season. The Manpanion loved the idea of having a Vog with a shared name. Plus, he HAD to try them on in both colors. Personally, I like the black. But the brown looks equally amazing. Also, they were super comfy and have a great look to them. I can’t describe them. It’s kind of like, a hiking boot and a dress shoe got together and had a REALLY COOL baby named Jose. The online photos don’t do justice to these babies. Gentlemen, if you find yourself in a store, please do yourselves a favor and try this one on.

Venus.Final

Queen of the Skies | Venus. I didn’t try these on, but I thought you’d want to see Venus, the Dino-Vogs. So unique and pretty, no?

Well, that’s it for now. Please know that I did make a second visit to Le Dealers and am working on those posts. Of course, if you “Like” us on Facebook or start following the blog, you’ll know exactly when those posts will appear. ‘Til next time….

For the love of Vogs,
